GridTech 2015
POWERGRID with the support of Ministry of Power and in association with CBIP and IEEMA organised its 5th International Exhibition and Conference GRIDTECH 2015 from 8th to 10thApril 2015 at ITPO, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on new technologies in Transmission, Distribution, Renewable Energy Integration, Smart Grid, Communication etc. The exhibition and the concurrent summit was an excellent global networking opportunity for exhibitors, visitors and delegates.
GRIDTECH provides a platform to manufacturers/suppliers/academicians/consultants to showcase their State-of-the-Art technologies and products in the field of Transmission, Distribution, Smart Grid, Renewable Energy Integration, Communication etc. This biennial international event along with concurrent conference provides a unique opportunity for the power utilities, planners, policy makers, regulators, manufacturers, research institutions, academicians, consultants etc. to get exposed to emerging technologies in the above fields for various applications.

There were 250 teams was shortlisted for pre final round and finally selected in top 29 Teams , which were selected to present their innovation in Pragti Maidan ,New Delhi during GRID TECH 2015.

V-NEXT System

V-NEXT System is a Renewable Integration into Smart Micro Grid . It promises Energy Conservation through Automated Control & Community Efforts. It manages Energy usage . This system consists of software and hardware components. The power usage is controlled using a set of hardware devices, consists of Central Control unit, solar panels unit , wind turbine, Biomass generating unit , Industrial & Residential Load , it Integrates renewable sources with main grid and focusing on utilization of renewable energy sources located at different places and reduce loading on Power generating units & saving of conventional energy sources and also good impact on environment because reduction in Pollution. Project presented by Navtej swaroop singh, Heera lal Bhadrecha, Nikhil Dave, Shubham Kumar Gupta. Project was guided by Mr Santosh Jangid (Asst. Professor) BKBIET , Pilani.

V-Next System


SPARSH System is a Solar powered automobile automation for heat stroke prevention, Heatstroke in cars is a rapid growing problem in all over the world. The atmosphere and the windows of a car are relatively “transparent” to the sun’s shortwave radiation and are warmed little. However this shortwave energy does heat objects that it strikes. For example, a dark dashboard or seat can easily reach temperatures in the range of 180 to over 200 degrees F. At 107 degrees F we begin to lose consciousness and the body stops to function. In only USA, since 1998, 619 children have died in vehicles from heat stroke and this number is very large all over the world. SPARSH is providing a solution for this fatal problem by using embedded system , information sharing platform ,sensors & the whole system powered by the solar panel placed on the top of the car. There will be a warning SMS on car owner mobile phone that “FORGET ME NOT”. Project presented by Navtej swaroop singh ,EEE final year Student.

The Imagine Cup is an annual competition sponsored and hosted by Microsoft Corp which brings together young technologists worldwide to help resolve some of the world’s toughest challenges. All Imagine Cup competitors create projects that address the Imagine Cup theme: “Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems”. Started in 2003, it has steadily grown in size, with more than 358,000 competitors representing 183 countries and regions in 2011.

There were 150 teams from across the country in the software development category that participated in the contest. After scrutiny, we narrowed down on 33 and interview, only seven teams made it to the finals. Rajasthan is the only state from where two teams have qualified,” said Mark D’Souza, Director, Student Program, Microsoft India. “The subject of their project is socially relevant for Rajasthan and I think they can make a good pitch to the local authorities,” said Mark.

The team ‘Jeevan’ from B K Birla Institiute of Engineering & Technology, Pilani remained as Runners-up in the National Finals, organized at Hotel Lalit, New delhi on 25th April’12 and awarded with Rs. 70000/- as prize money by Microsoft. Click here for Results.

Jeevan System promises Water Conservation through Automated Control & Community Efforts. It controls water usage behavior of a person. This system consists of software and hardware components. The water usage is controlled using a set of hardware devices, consists of water meters and weather condition checking meters and data is stored and accessed at a centralized server at Windows Azure which then sends information to the user using Silverlight based web app and Windows Phone app. It controls their water usages behavior by sending them alerts, creating community participation and hence educates them.

“The Jeevan System is designed to bring products and tools which focus on the formula ICCE-information, Control, Competition and Education. We have developed a web application, on-field device and mobile application which together helps control water usage through automation and community efforts.

It is a nice finish of a journey…and a good start for life ahead…and yeah…One doesn’t need anyone’s permission to change the world…. It all starts from inner self to outer world.”

Smart Helmet

Smart Helmet, an idea appreciated in all the forms of media, i.e. Television, Radio and Newspaper, was also among the Top Ten Projects at All India level at APOGEE-14, BITS Pilani.

It is a special idea which makes motorcycle driving much safer than before. The idea is to mandate the use of Helmet while driving, which will reduce the damage caused by an accident. The working principle of this helmet is, sensing of human touch, by using Capacitive Proximity Sensors which are placed inside the Helmet. Few other components are also mounted on helmet to transmit signals in accordance to sensors which are received by components installed in the vehicle. The behavior of the vehicle’s ignition is controlled using the received signals and hence it only gets enabled when the received signals are in accordance to the situation of wearing the helmet.

It has been made mandatory to wear helmet while driving through the section (129) of motor vehicle act1988, but we can see that a large group of people generally used to ignore it. Hence, we find that out of approximate 90000 two wheelers accidents per year, about 20000 of them lose their life and the remaining get seriously injured just because they were not having the proper protection gear i.e. Helmet. Rapid increase in number of accidents of two wheeler drivers and thereby the causalities had been a major cause of concern for the government. For the following problem, the idea of our project is to mandate the use of helmet while driving by controlling the ignition of the vehicle by it.

This idea proposes a very economical way to handle one the very difficult issue for government and society of Road safety. The domain of the idea is fully social. As per the stats available, there are 20 motorcycles per 100 persons in India and the population of India being 1.21 billion; it will be beneficial to a large group of people. The concept of the idea involves the basic phenomenon of transmission-receiving, logic gates and simple sensors, and hence there is no complexity involved in the system and the designing and implementation of the model practically is quite simple. Our model has negligible amount of weight involved and hence there will be no difficulty in using it for regular purpose. And also, the rider will have to wear the helmet for the whole duration of driving as the ignition will be stopped as soon as the helmet is removed.

On a contrary, there are a few disadvantages in the system as well. Though the efficiency of the sensors is very good, but as with every equipment there are some chances that the sensors may fail and the vehicle’s ignition will stop. The battery is also required to be charged regularly and after a while required to be changed. Also, it mandates the use of helmet during the whole course of driving which can be difficult sometime. Hence, this idea, if implemented can be a revolutionary change for the society in terms of people safety.

Reuse of Water through Moisture Extraction

This project was also an idea with fully social domain. Using the simple concept of evaporation and condensation it is to recycle the waste water to have clean water economically and naturally.

This project was the 5th best project at the technical fest of IIT Roorkee under the event “The Green Walk”.

The scarcity of water is being felt everywhere. Ground water level is also going down with each possible day. Despite the above facts, people are still not aware of using it properly and are letting a lot of water as wastage. In view of the upcoming problem of scarcity of water on one hand and wastage on the other, it is the need of the hour to find solutions for making optimum use of water. To address this problem this project proposes a solution by recycling the dirty water flown into the mud pockets and make it reusable at a reasonable cost.

For this purpose the hot dry air is blown over the beds of dirty water via an exhaust fan. This causes the air to become moist, and causes a significant change in the humidity at the other end of the water beds. This moist air has significant amount of water vapors in it and also importantly this moist air is not affected by the dirtiness of the water. This whole procedure is done in a chamber with little allowance of exterior atmosphere. The surface of the other end of the chamber is kept at a temperature favorable for condensation to allow process of conversion of water vapors into water. The coming moist air when collide with the cool surface, it gets converted into water droplets and can be collected by designing suitable mechanical arrangement.
This idea presents a very economical way of reutilizing the waste water at different scales. Just by installing a very small condensation chamber, the industries can re use the waste water of their place for any purpose even for gardening purpose.


Similarly, at places like desert, where the air is quite dry, installing a small chamber at the place where the waste water is collected, quite significant amount of water can be recycled and used for agriculture purposes. Even in houses, underground water can be purified by using this small and economical system.
Also, one of the special features of this system is that the power requirement of the exhaust fan and the condensation chamber can be easily fulfilled by using the renewable energy sources of solar and wind energy.
Hence this system provides a very economical and better option for re using the water.
